In this post I will talk about my experience buying source code from Chupamobile, having it reskinned and trying to make a profit from it.

Coming up with an idea

I was looking to purchase some source code on Chupamobile in July 2017 so I could make a new IOS app. I knew I wanted the app to be free. I knew I wanted to make money off ads. I knew I want it to have at least 4 in-app purchases. I thought having those 4 elements would make it easy to profit from the app.

Since I already owned dozens of video Mac applications, I thought a video IOS app was the way to go. I took my most popular Mac app at that time, a slow-mo video player, and decided to make an IOS version.

The plan for the app was to allow people to watch video 1 time slower than normal and limit the length of the video they could watch to 3 minutes.

Access to slower and faster speeds would be available via in-app purchase. I also planned to have an in-app purchase to watch video in reverse and another to watch video of any length and a fourth in-app purchase that would give people access to all the features.

Once I knew what I wanted to do I had to find video source code on Chupamobile.com Even though their were dozens of video app source codes on Chupamobile.com this one stood out to me right away. It seemed like a higher quality video player than the other ones I looked at. Plus the price was perfect at $99 for a single license.

Video Player

On top of that their was a 14 day money back guarantee so if the app wasn’t suitable for my needs I could have gotten a refund.

Development

The developer I was working with at the time had made many apps for me so I knew that it wouldn’t cost much for him to modify and rebrand the app. We agreed on a price of $111 for him to add all the new features and upload the app to my iTunes connect account.

IOS Project

I was concerned the banner ads would interfere with the controls, but he ensured me it wouldn’t.

After a few days the app was completed and he uploaded to the app store for me. Once it was approved I sat back and waited for the millions to roll in.

Earnings

In its two plus year in existence the app hasn’t performed as well as I hoped it would. It has had 5,100 installs and as of today it has made $68.77 from in-app purchases.

In-App Purchases

The app has made an additional .41 cents from Google Admob. The ads have performed poorly because took Google Admob off and placed my own ads to a dating site on the app. I have been meaning to switch the ads back to Google Admob forever, but I haven’t got to it yet.

All together this app has made $69.18 for a total loss of $141.82.

Improvement

I have two options if I want to make this app a winner. One is advertise the app. Sometimes the only thing keeping an app from making money is exposure. I am relying on organic installs and with so many video players available, getting the installs I need to make good money from this app won’t happen organically.

The second thing I could do is change my ads back to Google Admob and add more in-app purchases. I already have 4 in-app purchases, adding 10 more would be a breeze.

The issue is this app is already dead in the water, adding more features means spending more money. At this point I think I will let the app die. I think I would regret spending more money on it. However, if I change gears and work on the app in the future I will do an updated post.

Summary

Obviously, I would have loved to make a profit from this App, but things haven’t worked out. It was a good experience to purchase existing source code and have it molded into something new. The developer that made my IOS app did not have a problem working with the source code I gave him.

If you are looking to have an app developed in the future and don’t want to start from scratch I would definitely visit Chupamobile.com to see if they have a source code that can meet your needs.
